Mahakavi Prof. Hari Shanker Adesh (August 7, 1936 – December 27, 2020) was an internationally revered poet, composer, educator, and spiritual philosopher . Across a prolific public life spanning more than six decades, Prof. Adesh institutionalized systematic education in Hindi literature, Sanskrit, Urdu, and Indian classical music throughout the Caribbean, North America, and Europe .
Arriving in Trinidad and Tobago in 1966, with his wife and two children, as a Cultural Representative from the Government of India through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Prof. Adesh observed a passionate yearning within the Indo-Caribbean community to reconnect with their linguistic and ancestral heritage . Where structured academies were absent, he established training institutions, founded the Bharatiya Vidya Sansthhaan (BVS), and instructed tens of thousands of students .
Beyond his pedagogical genius, Prof. Adesh composed eight monumental Hindi epics (Mahakavyas) and pioneered Patra Kaavya Shaili in modern Hindi letters (authoring his first four volumes for his Bahu, Kadambari Adesh) .
